OLD FRIENDS
The 1960s were a tumultuous time in American history; it was also a decade in which some of the most memorable pop music was born. It was the era in which the traditions of folk music – strong, impactful songwriting, with messages of peace, humanity and concern for the common person – met the energy of rock 'n' roll, then just in its second decade of existence. It has influenced countless modern folkies, both songwriters and performers, and its greatest songs are still recognized by people born decades after.
Before it became nearly synonymous with singer-songwriters, folk music meant the tradition of singing songs that had been written long before, songs whose authorship had often long been lost. Old songs were recycled and sometimes updated to reflect current events or styles of music, but most importantly were kept alive to reflect the world in which they were born, and to impart the lesson that whatever a society is going through at the moment, people have gone through before, sometimes many times over.
It is in honor of this timeless era of music that we have chosen, in the longtime folk tradition, to re-create and reinterpret some of our favorite songs of some of the 1960s and '70s.
These songs are among the most meaningful and impactful creations of some of the decades’ most beloved artists; acts who influenced the sound of Gathering Time’s original music; songs GT revels in playing alongside their own, and whose messages of love, concern and wisdom are as relevant today as they were a half-century or more ago.
